Biennale Jatim XI

Biennale Jatim is a provincial art event held biennially by the Biennale Jatim Foundation. First initiated in 2005 in Surabaya, the event was conceived as a platform to reflect on the milestones and developments of East Java–based artists, while mapping the region’s evolving artistic landscape over time.

For its eleventh edition, held in Gresik in 2025, the branding concept is developed through a tri-color approach derived from the curatorial framework, which maps three key territorial and socio-cultural contexts in East Java: coastal (pesisir), urban, and mountainous (gunung) areas. Each color represents these distinct yet interconnected landscapes, translating curatorial ideas into a visual system that is both symbolic and flexible. The concept is further informed by the idea of a “persinggahan” (transit point), inspired by bus terminals as spaces of movement, encounter, and exchange. This is reflected in a responsive logogram system that adapts dynamically across applications, echoing the visual language of terminals. Through this approach, the identity of Biennale Jatim XI reflects the diversity of artistic practices and narratives emerging from these regions, positioning the biennale as a space that connects different geographies, perspectives, and forms of expression.
